Anti-oxidant Power Of Peanuts

Research now claims that peanuts rival many fruits when it comes to their antioxidant value, according to the University of Florida’s research. Peanut not only contain a wide variety of helpful antioxidants, but they contain the ‘good’ fat.

“When it comes to antioxidant content, peanuts are right up there with strawberries,” said Steve Talcott, assistant professor of food science and human nutrition at the University of Florida. “We expected a fairly high antioxidant content in peanuts, but we were a bit shocked to find that they’re as rich in antioxidants as many kinds of fruit.”

The study researched a dozen different varieties of peanuts measuring their ability to block the aging effect of free radicals that occur naturally in the body and damage living cells causing heart disease, stroke, and some cancers.

Antioxidants became popular when reports started hailing them as a miracle weapon in the battle against cancer. This lead many people to add more orange and red fruit to their diet and increase vitamins A, C, and E which are recognized as antioxidants.

Peanuts are a good source of Vitamin E.

University of Florida researchers studied peanuts and found that they contain high concentrations of polyphenols. Roasting increases the levels, boosting their antioxidant content by 22 per cent, to the levels of blackberries and strawberries. In fact, the report goes on to state that roasted peanuts out-do apples, carrots and beets.

“If you compare them (peanuts) to other foods people think of as rich in antioxidants mostly fruits and berries peanuts come out somewhere in the middle,” Talcott said. “They’re no match for the foods at the top of the scale, such as pomegranate, but they do rival other foods that people eat just for their antioxidant content.”

“We already know from previous studies that including peanuts and peanut butter in a healthful diet can lower cholesterol, help people lose weight and prevent type 2 diabetes,” said Kristen Ciuba, a nutritionist for the Peanut Institute, a nonprofit organization in Albany, Ga., funded by the peanut industry.

“It’s certainly worth looking into further,” said Gorbet, a co-author of the study. “The big question is not whether it can be done the question is whether the demand is there. So far, people haven’t been seeking out peanuts for their antioxidant content, but maybe in the future they will be.”

Not everyone is willing to move peanuts to the list of life-saving, healthy foods. Dr. Mercola, author of Total Health Program has a word of warning for people who want to increase the amount of peanuts they eat.

Dr. Mercola states that peanuts are heavy in Omega-6 fats that distort the Omega 3:6 ratio, and they may contain a carcinogenic mold called aflatoxin, as well as pesticides. All of these cause serious health problems and disease.

He continues to tell people to eat organic peanut butter, pour the oil off the top of the peanut butter jar to lower the Omega-6 content, and even mixing in Brewer’s yeast.

3 Easy Ways To Eat More Greens

One of the central components of any healthy diet is eating a sufficient quantity of greens. Yet 95% of people who follow a health diet, do not consume enough green leafy vegetables.

I’ll admit, I often have trouble (or sometimes even lack the desire) to eat my greens. There are days when I just don’t eat enough of them. I know greens are good. I know I need to eat more greens but I just don’t do it.

And then I discovered a fun way to get more greens into my diet. Here are my Top-3 Ways to get more greens into your diet.

1. Make Green Smoothies

Green smoothies are great and my favorite way to consume a large quantity of greens! When I first heard about green smoothies I was a little skeptical about blending fruit and greens and was surprised by the result.

Here are some recipes from my ebook Smoothies for Optimal Health.

Berry Roman Smoothie

1 cup strawberries
2 whole bananas
1/2 bunch romain
1/2 to 1 cup water

Blend fruit and water. Add romaine lettuce. Enjoy.

Being Green Smoothie

2 cups fresh spinach
1 whole grated cucumber or carrot
2 whole bananas
1 whole orange
3 whole apples, juiced

In a blender, whirl together all ingredients until thick and smooth.

2. Make Blended Salads

Once you’ve gotten used to the taste of greens in your smoothies, you can graduate to making blended salads. You can transition gradually by reducing the amount of fruit in your smoothie and increasing the quantity of greens. Gaspacho is a type of blended salad. Here is one of my favorite recipes (though I will admit it took me a while to get used to the taste and texture of blended salads).

Blended Salad

2 medium tomatoes, roughly chopped
2 ribs of celery
4 leaves lettuce (big)
1 big handful spinach
1 green onion
1/2 avocado
1/4 cup parsley
2 Tbs. dulse flakes
1 Tbs. nori flakes (optional)
Water if needed

Blend the tomatoes together, and add the rest of the ingredients progressively. Use water only if you need to. A blended salad should be quite thick.

3. Find One Good Healthy Salad Dressing

A funny thing happened once I started consuming more greens in my diet. I started to dislike some of my favorite “healthy” dressings. My tastebuds lurched at the taste of olive oil. So I compiled a collection of healthy salad dressings in my ebook “The Top 70 Healthy Salad Dressings You Can Make in Less Than 2 Minutes”

Here’s a recipe to get you started.

2 tomatoes or cucumbers
2 Tbs. apple cider vinegar or lemon juice
1 cup fresh dill
1 small avocado

Blend tomatoes and add other ingredients progressively. Blend until smoothie. Add other seasonings if desired. Use more water if necessary.

We know greens are good for us and we should all strive to get more greens in our diet but don’t force yourself to eat more greens if you don’t like them! You’ll get sick easily. Instead, let your innate hunger for greens come back naturally, by slowly incorporating more greens in your diet in the form of green smoothies, blended salads, etc. You’ll find that as your diet starts to become cleaner, you will naturally crave more greens and raw foods.

Quercetin- A Flavonol

Quercetin is one of the flavonoids groups. It is in fact a flavonol. It is found in apples, onions, tea, red grapes, leafy green vegetables, citrus fruits, broccoli, cherries, raspberries, prickly pear cactus, and some varieties of honey. Especially, those made from the Eucalyptus flower.

Quercetin is a very active form of flavonoid. It is present in many medicine plants that have been used since ancient times, like the Aloe Vere. It is also found in many fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

It is anti inflammatory, which helps to promote healing and boosts the body’s immune system. It also helps in preventing certain ailments and diseases.

It slows down the release and manufacture of histamine, and as such, is good for the relief of allergies and insect bites. It does this by blocking the secretion of histamine. It is also anti inflammatory, and as such, can help with certain types of arthritis and prostate inflammation. It increases the manufacture of fibronectin and collagen, which help to keep joints and skin in good condition. It promotes the healing of wounds and abrasions and aids in repairing nerve damage.

Quercetin is a phytoestrogen which works like estrogen, and is helpful in inhibiting the growth of breast cancer. It binds to estrogen receptors and stops the breast cancer cells from getting estrogen. This will stop their growth. It has also been found to be very useful in prevention of hardening of the arteries. It prevents build up of macrophages. Quercetin also strengthens capillaries helping with blood flow and circulation.

It is also an antioxidant. In fact it is known to be one of the most powerful ones available today. This means that it protects the body from free radicals. The liver produces these free radicals as part of the metabolic process. The free radicals can cause damage and aging to the body’s cells.

Research is being done to possibly help with cancer, respiratory diseases, heart disease, and cataracts. Research with Quercetin has shown that it helps to prevent cancer by preventing the flow of oxygen and nutrients to cells with cancer.

As you can see, Quercetin is a very powerful substance and has multiple uses in the body. It can also be taken in the form of diet supplements. These are available in health food stores or through distributors. It is very wise to consult with your doctor before you take any diet supplements. Although natural products like Quercetin, rarely have side effects.

The Earth’s Most Potent (And Natural) Anti-Aging Foods

Research studies have been focusing a great deal in recent years on determining which kinds of foods
